Learning another language is important as it enables effective interactions and connections with people from diverse backgrounds, while also opening up new opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Language learning creates an innovative culture

Language learning can contribute to the creation of an innovative culture within an organization in several ways:

  1. Cognitive Flexibility:
Learning new languages exercises the brain, enhancing cognitive flexibility and adaptability. Individuals who engage in language learning often develop the ability to think creatively, solve problems from different angles, and embrace new perspectives, which are essential for innovation.
  2. Cross-Cultural Understanding:
Language learning fosters an appreciation for different cultures, beliefs, and ways of thinking. This understanding can lead to a more inclusive and diverse environment, where a variety of viewpoints and ideas are embraced, sparking innovation through the fusion of different perspectives.
  3. Breaking Communication Barriers:
Language barriers can stifle the flow of ideas and collaboration. Language learning enables effective communication across linguistic divides, facilitating the exchange of innovative concepts and solutions among team members from diverse backgrounds.
  4. Access to Global Knowledge:
Many innovative ideas and breakthroughs emerge from different parts of the world. Language proficiency allows individuals to access a wider range of information, research, and literature, enabling them to incorporate global knowledge into their work.
  5. Enhanced Networking:
Language skills facilitate networking and relationship-building with people from different regions. Building connections with individuals who speak different languages can lead to cross-border collaborations, joint ventures, and the sharing of innovative practices.
  6. Inspiration from Different Cultures:
Learning about the idioms, expressions, and cultural references of a new language exposes individuals to unique ways of expressing ideas. This exposure can spark creative thinking and inspire novel approaches to problem-solving.
  7. Innovation in Multilingual Settings:
In organizations with multilingual teams or diverse customer bases, language skills enable employees to gather insights, provide tailored solutions, and innovate products or services that cater to specific linguistic and cultural preferences.
  8. Fostering Open-Mindedness:
Language learning requires humility and a willingness to embrace new challenges. These qualities contribute to an open-minded and receptive environment, where individuals are more willing to experiment, take risks, and explore unconventional solutions.
  9. Enriching the Idea Pool:
Multilingual individuals bring a broader range of experiences, ideas, and perspectives to the table. This diversity enriches brainstorming sessions and collaborative efforts, fueling the generation of innovative concepts.

For businesses, language skills open doors to international markets. Innovation can arise from adapting products, services, and strategies to meet the needs and preferences of different linguistic and cultural communities.
  11. Leadership in a Globalized World:
In a globalized economy, leaders who understand and appreciate different languages and cultures are better positioned to guide their organizations toward international opportunities and innovative partnerships.

Why language learning is important for US companies

To answer this question, we created a case study with the US company Sodexo which has a diverse workforce from over 120 countries. The study highlights two distinct challenges: Spanish-speaking employees aiming to improve their English and English-speaking management staff seeking better interaction with Spanish-speaking employees. Sodexo collaborated with Babbel’s language learning app to address these challenges.

The study lasted 10-12 weeks and involved both corporate English and Spanish learning. Participants were encouraged to dedicate 20 minutes a day to the app, with 15 minutes for new lessons and 5 minutes for reviewing previous content. The results of the study were positive, with improvements in language skills, particularly in oral fluency, grammar, and vocabulary. Moreover, participants reported enhanced self-confidence, self-efficacy, and self-esteem, leading to more positive work experiences and customer interactions.

Language learning not only improved person-to-person communication but also facilitated smoother internal company communication involving new technologies. Additionally, the acquisition of language skills improved social bonds and teamwork, fostering trust and open communication among employees.

For US companies with multilingual teams, adopting proven language-learning programs like Babbel is essential. Such programs empower employees, enhance team cohesion, and contribute to increased profits. By dedicating just 20 minutes a day, companies can improve employees’ language skills and professional development, leading to successful outcomes in an interconnected world. Babbel emerges as a practical solution for addressing language barriers and driving innovation.

How to find the best language learning program for your company

If you’ve recently decided to implement a language learning solution in your organization’s workflow or are interested in doing so, creating a road map is vital to ensure that your team gets off to a good start. Here at Babbel, we’re experts when it comes to introducing companies and their employees to the limitless possibilities of multilingualism, and from our experience, putting a learning plan in place is the best way to get set up for success.

In order to find the type of program that will work for your organization, you’ll need to create a plan that looks at the big picture of what you hope to achieve. We’ve put together some guidelines to help managers do exactly this. The next steps outlined below will help the leader of your language learning program put together a plan that will launch your team into successful learning, and ensure that they remain on track along the way.

1. Assess your company’s language learning needs

To find the right language course for your business, the first step is to evaluate exactly what you need: Are you looking for a course that concentrates on learning one specific language? Or for a course that covers as many languages as possible? What sort of course content should be covered? Which technical requirements have to be in place?

Before you start your research, you should know all of your company’s requirements for a language course. You can start by answering the following questions:

  • Should the course be online, in person, or perhaps a mixture of both, called a blended learning model?
  • Which topics and themes are especially relevant for your employees?
  • Should the course content cover only business-related themes or expand to other areas?
  • How important is it to you that your language course uses the latest pedagogical concepts?
  • What sort of devices (for online courses) should be compatible with the course?
  • Do existing learning management systems (LMS) have to be taken into account? Do these interfaces have to be made available to the new providers?

2. Define your strategy

Once you’ve gathered information from both the program leader and participants, you should choose a learning strategy that prioritizes your team’s learning objectives and empowers your employees with course content related to their everyday lives and workflows. When deciding, keep in mind that the best language learning strategies give employees the tools and support they need to succeed in a format that doesn’t negatively impact productivity.

3. Find the right product

Finding the type of language training that’s right for your company can be simple if you’re provided with the right options.

We have defined three primary learning models that help assign the needs of your organization to the right product for your employees. Our comprehensive, hands-on guide to language learning in your company provides a detailed breakdown of these models and helps you identify where your needs lie within the Babbel framework.

4. Evaluate your progress

Evaluation is a key part of ensuring the success (and longevity) of any language learning program. Keeping track of how participants are performing and how well they are interacting with the content will allow your management team to gauge the effectiveness of the plan you’ve put in place and to tweak it as needed. We tried it ourselves!

A couple of years ago, we tried a little experiment: Teaching the Swedish language at Babbel – with Babbel!

One of our project managers, Elin Asklöv, utilized a blended learning approach to teach her native language, Swedish, to her colleagues. The experiment involved a twelve-week Swedish course that combined app-based learning with traditional classroom instruction, following the flipped classroom model.

The success of our experiment demonstrated the effectiveness of blended learning in language education, highlighting the advantages of combining app-based training with in-depth speaking activities and real-life communication practice. The experiment also shed light on the benefits and challenges of teaching and learning pronunciation and vocabulary.

How long does it take to learn a language?

The speed of language learning depends on factors like prior knowledge, time commitment, and desired proficiency level. Basic proficiency can be achieved in a few months, while advanced levels require more time to grasp complexities.

Dedication directly affects progress, though it’s essential to recognize that languages vary in difficulty; for instance, native German speakers may learn Dutch or English more swiftly due to shared structures, unlike languages such as Polish, Spanish, or Japanese.

Use these tools to support your employee’s language learning

There are many tools that can help your employees to stay on track of their learning goals. We’ve gathered five tools that are especially effective from our experience.

Hang up language posters

Language posters are visual tools that aid language learning by featuring key vocabulary, grammar rules, and cultural information.

We offer these posters to our customers for free, which can be strategically placed in workplaces to create a motivating and effective learning environment. Just speak to your dedicated Customer Success Manager to receive your language posters from Babbel for Business!

Use time management strategies

Effective time management strategies are crucial for language learning as they enable learners to allocate dedicated periods for focused study, practice, and review. Learning a new language requires consistent exposure and repetition to reinforce concepts and retain information.

By implementing time management techniques, learners can break down their goals into manageable tasks, allocate specific time slots for practice, and ensure regular engagement with the language.

This approach enhances the efficiency of learning, minimizes procrastination, and creates a structured framework that maximizes the utilization of available time, ultimately leading to faster progress and greater language proficiency.

Organize language lunches

Language lunches offer a unique opportunity to bring colleagues together while simultaneously supporting their language-learning endeavors. During these informal gatherings, participants engage in conversations and interactions using the target language, creating an immersive and enjoyable learning experience.

Language lunches foster camaraderie among coworkers, promote cultural exchange, and boost confidence in using the language in real-life situations. Moreover, they provide a relaxed setting for language practice, encouraging individuals to step outside their comfort zones and improve their communication skills. These lunches contribute to a positive and inclusive workplace environment, where learning becomes a collaborative and social endeavor.

Write reminder emails

Reminder emails play a crucial role in enhancing the learning success of your employees by helping them stay engaged, motivated, and on track with their language learning goals.

These emails serve as timely prompts, gently nudging learners to allocate time for their language practice amidst their busy schedules. By reminding employees of upcoming lessons, practice sessions, or language-related activities, these emails reinforce the importance of consistent learning and encourage active participation.

Additionally, reminder emails can provide valuable tips, resources, and progress updates, keeping learners informed and motivated throughout their language learning journey.

Overall, these emails contribute to a supportive and structured learning environment, ultimately leading to improved retention, skill development, and overall success in language acquisition.

Create fun games for language learning

If you work in an English-speaking environment you’ve probably “learned the ropes”, have witnessed a steep “learning curve” and went the “extra mile” at the “eleventh hour”.

The examples of English corporate jargon are endless. But the use of idioms in the business world is not restricted to the English language at all! In an increasingly globalized and culturally diverse business world, you might soon come across expressions from all around the world.

Test yourself and find out if you’re ready for the world stage and are able to crack the meaning of these international phrases:

Creating these fun language quizzes for your employees offers several valuable benefits for their language-learning journey: They add an element of enjoyment and engagement to the learning process, making it more appealing and encouraging active participation. Furthermore, they help break the monotony of traditional learning methods and inject an element of excitement.

By incorporating gamified elements into language learning through quizzes, you create a sense of achievement and healthy competition among employees. This fosters a positive learning culture, enhances team dynamics, and encourages colleagues to support and motivate each other.

Use your company’s intranet

Using your company’s intranet is a powerful way to raise awareness about your Babbel language learning program among employees. The intranet serves as a central hub where employees regularly access information and resources. By incorporating Babbel into the intranet, you can effectively promote the program and provide details for interested individuals.

This approach will help maximize visibility and engagement with your Babbel program, making it easier for employees to access language learning opportunities and enrich their skill set. If needed, your account management team can provide tailored images and content to align with your organization’s needs.

Use fun incentives

  • team-building activities
  • peer recognition programs
  • game-based challenges

Help your team overcome the fear of speaking a foreign language

Overcoming the fear of speaking a new language in a group setting, known as xenoglossophobia, is a significant aspect of language learning that is often overlooked.

Xenoglossophobia may arise from previous negative language-speaking experiences or from feelings of inadequacy when interacting with more proficient speakers. In a professional context, such fears are amplified due to the prospect of making errors and appearing vulnerable before colleagues.

Addressing these confidence challenges doesn’t just enhance language acquisition but also has broader implications for daily responsibilities. It can shed light on underlying team dynamics. For instance, if individuals hesitate to make mistakes in front of peers, this might indicate a need for team-building activities. By unearthing and tackling these issues, teams can become more content and self-assured, and contribute to a healthier work environment.

Use intrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation, which is driven by personal satisfaction and curiosity, is essential for fostering a culture of self-study and lifelong learning. It is contrasted with extrinsic motivation, which relies on external rewards. While the latter is also important, nurturing intrinsic motivation is crucial for promoting engagement, job satisfaction, and overall productivity.

There are various strategies to increase your employees’ intrinsic motivation:

  • providing autonomy
  • encouraging skill development
  • fostering a positive work environment
  • establishing meaningful work connections
  • setting clear and challenging goals
📚 More about this topic
In another article, we’re discussing 10 different strategies to increase employees’ intrinsic motivation in more detail.

Focus on team development

Team development plays a pivotal role in fostering effective language learning within an organizational context. Language acquisition is not merely an individual endeavor; it thrives when nurtured within a collaborative and supportive team environment.

Firstly, team development enhances communication and interaction among colleagues. Language learning often involves practicing conversational skills, articulating ideas, and comprehending others. By engaging in team-based language learning activities, individuals can practice real-life communication scenarios, receive immediate feedback, and learn from their peers. Team interactions create a dynamic learning ecosystem where members can share language insights, correct each other’s language usage, and collectively reinforce learning. As a result, team members become more proficient communicators, building stronger connections within the workplace and beyond.

Secondly, team development fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual support. Language learning can be daunting, especially when stepping outside one’s linguistic comfort zone. In a team-oriented environment, individuals feel a shared sense of encouragement and motivation. Teammates become allies in the language learning journey, offering assistance, celebrating progress, and empathizing with challenges. This supportive atmosphere reduces the fear of making mistakes, a common barrier in language learning, and encourages a culture of continuous improvement. Through teamwork, individuals build the confidence to engage in conversations, present ideas, and even venture into cross-cultural interactions, thereby enriching their language skills.

Lastly, team development provides opportunities for cultural exchange and diversity appreciation. Language is intricately linked to culture, and learning a new language often exposes individuals to different perspectives and ways of expression. In a diverse team, language learners can interact with colleagues from various linguistic backgrounds, gaining exposure to idioms, cultural nuances, and alternative communication styles. This exposure not only enhances language proficiency but also fosters intercultural competence. Through team collaboration, individuals become more attuned to the richness of global communication and develop a deeper understanding of cultural nuances, making them more effective communicators in an increasingly interconnected world.

In essence, team development acts as a catalyst for effective language learning, creating an ecosystem where communication, support, and cultural awareness thrive. It transforms language acquisition from a solitary pursuit into a shared journey of growth and empowerment, ultimately benefiting both individuals and the organization as a whole.

Universities and NGOs

Language learning plays a pivotal role in enhancing the operations of universities and NGOs, organizations dedicated to fostering personal growth and positive change. Universities serve as centers of academic excellence and research, while NGOs address social, environmental, and humanitarian challenges. Both institutions benefit from language learning in various ways.

For universities, language learning holds significance due to global engagement, a diverse student body, research and publications, study abroad programs, career opportunities, and cultural understanding. Language proficiency facilitates effective communication, inclusivity, international collaborations, and cultural sensitivity, contributing to holistic education and personal development.

Similarly, language learning empowers NGOs by enabling global outreach, local empowerment, effective communication with beneficiaries, crisis response, advocacy, collaboration, and cultural sensitivity. Multilingual skills enhance connections with beneficiaries, facilitate crisis management, and strengthen social impact, aligning with the diverse and complex nature of their work.

Babbel’s versatile language-learning solution supports both universities and NGOs by offering flexible, blended learning techniques. Students and employees can learn at their own pace, practice speaking, and engage in group or individual video classes. This approach enhances learning outcomes, fosters connections, and builds confidence. Our adaptable courses, industry-specific content, and cost-effective flat-rate plans make it a valuable asset in the pursuit of academic excellence and positive social change.

How long does it take to learn a new language?

The time it takes to learn a new language varies widely based on factors such as language complexity, your prior language experience, daily practice, and learning methods. Generally, achieving basic conversational fluency might take several months of dedicated study, while reaching higher proficiency levels may take a few years of consistent effort. Remember, regular practice and immersion greatly accelerate language acquisition.

How can you learn a language fast?

To learn a language fast, engage in blended learning, combining self-study through apps and online courses with real-world practice. Immerse yourself in the language by watching movies, reading, and conversing with native speakers. Set achievable goals, focus on high-frequency words, and maintain consistency to accelerate your language acquisition process.

Can you learn two languages at once?

Yes, it’s possible to learn two languages at once, but it requires careful planning and dedication. Blended learning, using interactive apps, online resources, and structured study methods, can help manage the challenge. Maintain clear goals, allocate time effectively, and ensure regular practice in both languages to achieve successful dual-language acquisition.

What is the hardest language to learn?

Determining the hardest language to learn is subjective and depends on individual factors. However, languages with vastly different structures and grammar from one’s native tongue, such as Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, or languages with complex inflectional systems like Hungarian or Finnish, are often considered challenging due to their unique linguistic features and writing systems. Difficulty also depends on a learner’s linguistic background and familiarity with related languages.

What is the easiest language to learn?

The ease of learning a language depends on various factors, including one’s native language and prior language learning experience. Generally, languages with simpler grammar, straightforward pronunciation, and vocabulary similarities to one’s native tongue can be considered easier to learn. For many English speakers, languages like Spanish, Italian, or Dutch are often perceived as relatively accessible due to their shared vocabulary and relatively uncomplicated grammatical structures.

Can you learn a language while sleeping?

While some studies suggest that exposure to a new language during sleep might have minimal impact on vocabulary retention, actively learning a language requires conscious effort, practice, and engagement. Language acquisition involves comprehension, memory consolidation, and practice, which are best achieved while awake and attentive. Passive exposure during sleep is unlikely to replace the active learning processes needed for effective language acquisition.

How long does it take to learn sign language?

The time it takes to learn sign language varies depending on factors like individual aptitude, practice consistency, and the complexity of the sign language system. Basic communication skills in a sign language can often be acquired in a few months of dedicated practice, while achieving fluency similar to a native speaker may take several years of immersive learning and interaction within the Deaf community. Regular practice, cultural understanding, and ongoing engagement are key to mastering sign language.
